The $2.2 trillion global entertainment industry allows people to socialize, relax, have fun, de-stress, and live longer/higher-quality lives1. As per a study, engaging in leisure activities helps lower stress levels, better mood, lower heart rate, and increase psychological engagement2. Entertainment activities provide a source of eustress, the good kind of stress that keeps you feeling vital and alive3. Leisure is also a source of family cohesion as an enhanced parental role, and positive interactions lead to strengthened bonds4. Today, experiences have become social assets as 78% of American millennials choose a desirable experience over a desirable product5.
Walt Disney reinvented the amusement park industry by first addressing the willingness of American families in a post-WWII economy to drive family spending on entertainment11. Today, the company’s 13 Disney theme parks, 46 resort hotels, and a Disney cruise line located in five cities worldwide host 157.3 million guests each year6. Walt Disney World, which covers 10,000 hectares, is the most visited theme park worldwide, with 48 million annual visitors7. Disney’s parks and resorts market share is 26.37%8.
85% of visitors believe Disney theme parks are fun for all age groups since they provide a complete entertainment experience for all9;p23. By visiting Disney parks, people have access to childhood memories and dreams and can escape from the reality of their everyday stressful lives9;p28-29. According to research, 71% of people who had planned a Disney trip in the upcoming six months felt greater levels of energy10. Therefore, Disney has a 70% return rate for its first-time visitors as the experience easily translates into a social asset5.
Walt Disney provides its 157.3 million annual visitors with fine family entertainment and leisure experience. Disney’s theme parks have closed only eight times in history, continuing to be a source of fun, eustress, and boosting energy levels.
